Life insurance companies in India mobilized New Business Premium (NBP) worth ₹47,004.84 crore in July. This represents a 20.65% increase compared to the ₹38,958.05 crore recorded during the same period last year, though it is only marginally higher than the ₹46,490.53 crore collected in the preceding month of June. In July, the state-owned Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) led the sector by recording a growth of over 23% in its New Business Premium (NBP), generating ₹27,993.61 crore; the figure stood at ₹22,617.64 crore during the same period the previous year. Private life insurance companies (26 in number) recorded ₹19,011.23 crore this month; this represents a 16% growth compared to the ₹16,340.41 crore recorded in the previous year. In the four months ending in July, the New Business Premium (NBP) of life insurance companies rose by 17.45% to ₹1,55,625.31 crore, compared to ₹1,32,502.74 crore recorded during the same period the previous year. Within this, LIC recorded a growth of 14.04%, generating ₹93,542.49 crore, up from ₹82,028.32 crore in the previous year. In July, life insurance companies sold a total of 2,298,459 policies or plans, compared to 2,278,245 in the previous year. According to recent data released by the Life Insurance Council, the New Business Premium (NBP) of private companies rose by 23% to ₹62,082.82 crore (compared to ₹50,474.42 crore in the previous year). In its analysis of July’s performance—specifically regarding listed insurance companies—Emkay Research noted that shares of life insurance companies have experienced a decline (or correction) over the past few months due to regulatory concerns. It observed that current market valuations do not fully reflect the companies' business strengths, such as brand value, distribution networks, and operational scale. Retail APE (Annual Premium Equivalent) rose by approximately 9% year-on-year -driven by growth of around 8% in the private sector and about 10% for LIC (aided by a low base)—resulting in a slight moderation in the life insurance sector's growth momentum during July.
