RBI MPC minutes show cautious outlook on Inflation
20-Aug-26   11:34 Hrs IST

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released the minutes from the sixty-second meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) held from August 3 to 5, 2026. MPC member Nagesh Kumar highlighted that the Indian economy has shown strong resilience despite ongoing challenges like the conflict in West Asia, fluctuating crude oil prices, trade policy uncertainties, and agricultural risks due to El Niño affecting monsoons. The disruption caused by the West Asia conflict, particularly regarding the Strait of Hormuz, remains a concern, although India is working to diversify its supply sources.

Saugata Bhattacharya pointed out that the risks have evolved since the West Asia conflict began in late February 2026, with other uncertainties adding to the situation. The global economic outlook has been marked by significant market fluctuations, ongoing inflation worries, and changing policy expectations. Similarly, India's inflation and growth dynamics are unclear.

Ram Singh observed that economic headwinds have seen little change since the last MPC meeting, with the global economy facing persistent inflation, volatile financial markets, and signs of monetary tightening from advanced economies. The West Asia conflict continues to increase the prices of crude oil and its derivatives.

Indranil Bhattacharyya noted that the Indian economy has handled the challenges posed by the global geopolitical environment, trade uncertainties, and a volatile monsoon in Q1:2026-27 well. High-frequency indicators and early corporate results show continued growth in industrial and services sectors, supported by strong investment and government capital expenditure.

Poonam Gupta remarked that while global uncertainties increased again in July after subsiding in June, domestic rainfall patterns improved, leading to increased sowing and rising reservoir levels. These factors, alongside resilient high-frequency indicators, suggest the year’s growth outcome may exceed earlier projections and inflation could be slightly lower.

RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra indicated that inflation shows signs of normalizing from lower levels experienced last year. Average inflation has been 3.93 percent this year, with core inflation expected to align closer to overall inflation in the last quarter, suggesting a potential adjustment in the policy rate.
