Wireless Subscribers surge in August'26, says Ministry of communications

The Ministry of Communications reported today that wireless (mobile + Fixed Wireless Access) subscriptions advanced from 1306.27 million as of July 2026 to 1312.25 million as of August 2026, demonstrating a monthly growth rate of 0.46%. Total wireless subscriptions in urban areas rose from 753.86 million in July 2026 to 759.11 million in August 2026. Rural area subscriptions also increased from 552.40 million to 553.14 million during the corresponding period. The monthly growth rates for urban and rural wireless subscriptions were 0.70% and 0.13%, respectively.

India’s wireless tele-density advanced from 91.33% as of July 2026 to 91.69% as of August 2026. Urban wireless tele-density rose from 145.84% at the close of July 2026 to 146.66% at the close of August 2026. Rural wireless tele-density increased from 60.48% to 60.55% during the corresponding timeframe. Wireless subscribers in urban and rural areas represented 57.85% and 42.15% of the total wireless subscriber base, respectively, at the end of August 2026.

Data compiled from 1579 operators for August 2026 indicates that the aggregate number of broadband subscribers advanced from 1094.48 million as of July 2026 to 1101.21 million as of August 2026, reflecting a 0.61% monthly growth rate. The wireline subscriber count rose from 48.01 million at the close of July 2026 to 48.45 million at the close of August 2026. The wireline subscriber base experienced a net expansion of 0.44 million, corresponding to a monthly growth rate of 0.93%.

India’s aggregate wireline tele-density advanced from 3.36% as of July 2026 to 3.39% as of August 2026. Urban and rural wireline tele-density registered at 8.34% and 0.58% respectively, at the close of August 2026. The proportion of urban and rural subscribers within the total wireline subscriber base stood at 89.08% and 10.92% respectively, as of August 2026.
